Our Lucky Chimney Sweep!

Sweeping the bride off her feet is one thing… but a lucky chimney sweep will add extra flair to your special day!

If you are looking for something unusual and creative for your wedding, booking a lucky chimney sweep is a (brush) stroke of genius for a wedding your guests will remember!

In the UK it is considered a good omen if a bride sees a chimney sweep on the day of her wedding. Sweep-a-Gram is a traditional wedding custom that remains unique with today’s modern up-to-date wedding as that ultimate “Sign of Good Luck”.

Good Luck and Good Fortune is where you’re heading when a Dickens Sweep attends your Wedding. "Good Luck will rub off when he shakes hands with you" is a famous line made by Bert in the Internationally famous film Mary Poppins. In keeping with this sharing of luck, when the groom shakes hands with a Lucky Chimney Sweep, he also gives permission to the sweep to give a "Lucky Kiss" to the new bride. The bride who receives a kiss from a chimney sweep is especially fortunate.

Good Luck and Good Fortune is where you’re heading when our Dickens Sweep Harrison attends your Wedding.

Harrison is a very charming and dapper 9yr old chimney sweep. He’ll be dressed immaculately in traditional chimney sweep attire of cap, waistcoat, shirt, trousers with braces and neckerchief, he will arrive carrying a genuine Victorian cane rod and bristly brush. A sooty face completes the costume.

He can arrive at the church or venue at any time to suit you. Visits are usually arranged to greet the bride and groom as they are coming out of their ceremony, but the choice is yours.

What does a Lucky Chimney Sweep do?

After surprising the happy couple, by making his unexpected entrance to the music of Chim Chim Cher-ee, he proceeds to congratulating the newlyweds with a poem. Then the custom of the shaking the groom’s hand is performed, after which Harrison will have a ‘lucky kiss’ for the bride, bestowing good fortune on their marriage.  Harrison will gladly pose for photographs (don’t worry, no soot will touch the dress!) for you to capture this glorious occasion. A special scrolled poem is read aloud and presented to the happy couple along with two souvenir gifts to treasure as a reminder of the happy day.

The tale of the lucky chimney sweep can be traced back to the 18th century to a parade that was in attendance by King George III where it is reported that the king’s horse was startled by a yapping dog amongst the crowds and his horse then bolted.

A fearless London chimney sweep is said to have stepped out into the path of the runaway horses and brought it to a halt, calming the horse. The chimney sweep then disappeared back into the crowds before the king got the chance to thank him.

From that day the king declared that all chimney sweeps should be treated with honour and believed them to be bearers of Good Luck.

Later, when the King’s youngest daughter was to be married, King George sent for a chimney sweep because he believed that the presence of a chimney sweep would bring good luck and happiness to his daughter in her marriage, and the age-old tradition began, and the luck is still passed on to this day.

It is even rumoured that on the wedding day of the Queen and Prince Phillip a Chimney Sweep was escorted into Buckingham palace and was seen shaking hands with prince Phillip to bring him luck before the wedding.
